Push-up Wrist Pain?

BY JEN WIDERSTROM

One of the #1 training questions I get!

→ My wrists bother me during planks and push-ups. Any tips?

First of all don’t fret, this is super manageable!

As you settle into position, focus on using your entire upper body to share more of the load: It’s common during those movements to let gravity shove all of your weight into your wrist joints instead of engaging your chest, triceps, back and back muscles.

To do this, grip the ground with your palms and fingers, keep a micro-bend in your elbows, press your armpits to the sides of your body (almost like the reaction to someone tickling you there!), and breath into that tension!

If that doesn’t do the trick, try doing the moves using dumbbells: Place the weights on the floor (where your palms would typically be) so you can grab them like handles and skip flexing your wrist altogether.
