A Happy Person Secret: Mindset Matters

BY JEN WIDERSTROM

This is a pep talk. A motivational hoorah to remind yourself how good your life is no matter how chaotic it feels. I have recently been feeling like my head is underwater. I’m hearing it from work calls, friend calls, people on the street. We are feeling overwhelmed from a mental energy standpoint.

In the process of my conversations, I hear a lot of negative self-talk. “Oh I’m such a dummy, I forgot about this,” or, “I can’t believe how dependent I am that I need that,” or, “I just moved into a new house and my husband doesn’t feel well, so I have to do all of the unpacking by myself and I have my business to run and my kids to manage.” And I’m thinking…HOLD ON (*record scratch*).

Let’s reframe this conversation.

Instead of being down about buying a new home and having to unpack it alone, celebrate that you bought a new home! That you get to move in! You’re busy because your business is thriving! You’re a mom because you’ve created life and you're growing special human beings!

There is a commercial for State Farm that I love. A 16 year-old girl is getting her first car and an older guy is coming out to his car to find the wheels have been pulled off and it’s been vandalized. The girl shouts,” IS THIS MY CAR!?” The guy says, “IS THIS MY CAR!?”

If you watch it you’ll see, they are saying the same line of dialogue, but situationally they are in totally different positions. It’s a fun watch, but this is exactly what we do to ourselves.

The chaos we feel is because we’re busy, we’re loved, we’re purposeful, we are presented with challenges that we get to feel pride in conquering…there is benefit after benefit to a busy, beautiful life, but we just have to choose to see it that way.

Yesterday, someone gave me an almond milk latte. I was so pumped about it. I started drinking it…after I had already had two cups of coffee. I was so wired that I fumbled and dropped it. Instead of being upset about it, I accepted it as a sign from the Universe that I probably didn’t need more caffeine, and I just let it go. We just have to take our experiences as they come and always look at the other side of the coin. And most importantly… whatever is going on in your life, HAVE FUN! As my best friend Kelsey always reminds me, always aim to find the joy, and you’ll end up being just fine.
